Frequently asked questions
How does this tool count words?+
It splits your text on whitespace and ignores empty tokens. Contractions like "don't" count as one word; hyphenated compounds like "mother-in-law" also count as one.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?+
Both. You see two character totals: one including every space and line break, and one counting only visible characters.
How is reading time calculated?+
Reading time is the word count divided by an average silent reading pace of roughly 230 words per minute. Technical or dense writing may take longer in practice.
Is any of my text saved or uploaded?+
No. The counter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Close the tab and the text is gone.
